How do you know that paint can be considered environmentally friendly? Well like all eco issues there are hunderds of considerations, but the main indicator used at present is a paint's VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) level. This is normally displayed on the paint can.
There are five bands of VOC categories and they are Minimal, Low, Medium , High and Very High. The lower the VOC category of the paint the less pollutant the paint is considered to be. Oil based paints tend to have more VOCs and it is important to remember that paint thinners can also be a source of VOCs.
Once you've done you decorating it is worth investigating ways to dispose of leftover paint. Some councel refuse sites have a section for leftover tins of paint for other people to use. Some DIY chains also accept leftover paint to donate to community projects.
